Edits & Commercial Lengths

Main Edits:
For commercial usage, it’s essential to create multiple edits of a composition, typically referred to as commercial lengths. These include versions such as full-length, 30-second, 15-second, sting, and 30-second underscore. Stings are brief, impactful sections of a composition—often used to introduce or punctuate content—while underscores are more subtle, atmospheric versions designed to play beneath dialogue or visuals without being distracting. These shorter edits should highlight the most recognisable or impactful parts of the composition, ensuring that the music grabs attention and creates a lasting impression within the limited time frame.

Each version should maintain a consistent theme and be easy to follow. The last downbeat or musical content should end within 1.5 seconds of the edit’s length, avoiding long reverbs or delays. All compositions should resolve with purpose, preferably finishing on the root note. For example, if a track ends with a drum section, a final drum hit will provide a purposeful conclusion.

Loops:
Loops are particularly useful in drag-and-drop style projects or environments where continuous background music is needed. Though loops are compulsory for the Drag & Drop series, it is highly recommended that loops are provided for all projects to increase the chances of usage. Loops typically include a 4-bar underscore, which is a minimal version of the track, as well as 8-bar and 16-bar loops that contain the most memorable parts of the composition. These loops allow editors to repeat sections of music seamlessly and are essential in environments where non-stop background music is required.

Stems:
Stems provide editors with individual components of a composition. For commercial work, it’s important to provide stems for the main (full) version of the composition and for all loops. Stems allow editors to adjust the levels of each instrument and create their own mix, increasing the flexibility and usability of the track for different projects.

Side Note:
If vocals are used in the loops, it’s essential to provide instrumental versions of those loops as well, to offer additional flexibility to editors.

Why Commercial Edits Matter:
Commercial edits of music are crucial for reinforcing brand identity and creating emotional connections with viewers. Well-edited music can enhance the emotional tone of a commercial, making it more memorable and effective. Whether it’s upbeat and energetic to evoke excitement, or slow and reflective to create a more contemplative mood, the right music helps drive consumer behaviour. By aligning music with visual elements, advertisements become more cohesive and impactful. In fact, studies show that well-chosen music can significantly boost audience recall and brand association.

Moreover, clear edit points in the track make it easier for editors to work with, allowing them to make precise cuts to fit their needs. Including noticeable dips or transitions within the music gives editors flexibility in how they use the track, whether it’s for a commercial, trailer, or background music.
